A friend of mine who lives in Northampton, Massachusetts just sent me the following bit of news:
A joint session of the Massachusetts legislature has just defeated 151-45 a proposal to put a constitutional ban on gay marriage to the voters, eliminating any chances of getting it on the ballot in November 2008.
For a vote to go on the ballot, it has to receive 50 votes in TWO consecutive sessions, so this effectively kills the measure.
The current governor has lobbied hard to defeat the resolution. Mitt Romney is the one who filed a legal challenge when the legislature adjourned last year without voting.
The best proof that these bans aren't necessary is Massachusetts. Is there any serious evidence that life in Massachusetts has gone to hell since same sex marriage was legalized?
